Last year, during our international online conference “Climate Change Resilience Practices for Mediterranean Perennial Crops”, we launched a special contest to spotlight the most impactful solutions shared by researchers and practitioners across the Mediterranean.
Thanks to your strong participation and your votes, we are proud to present the 12 winning practices, selected from 28 inspiring presentations. These practices stand out for their concrete benefits, practicality, and potential to boost resilience in vineyards, olive groves, and other perennial crops. Here are the selected practices:
- Disease-resistant/tolerant grape varieties for sustainable winemaking and climate adaptation (E. Boselli, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy)
- Smart system for managing olive anthracnose (D. Tsitsigiannis, Agricultural University of Athens, Greece)
- Biostimulants and biofertilizers of natural origin for conventional and organic farming (J.M. Mulet Salort, Universitat Politècnica de València – CSIC, Spain)
- Encouraging bats (Kuhl’s pipistrelle) to control the grapevine moth Lobesia botrana (J. Martinez, Bodegas Enguera, Spain)
- Self-reseeding cover crops to reduce tillage and herbicide use in vineyards (L.G. Tramacere, University of Pisa, Italy)
- Kaolin application to enhance vine resilience and wine quality (J. Martinez, Bodegas Enguera, Spain)
- Monitoring new grapevine pests, including Empoasca vitis (J. Martinez, Bodegas Enguera, Spain)
- Soil and vegetation management to support arthropod diversity in vineyards (G. Maia, UTAD, Portugal)
- Adapting tillage to reduce frost risk in vineyards (G. Delanoue, IFV, France)
- Using shading nets as a multi-functional solution to heat and sun stress (G. Cola, University of Milan, Italy)
- Innovative methods to terminate winter cover crops to improve drought resilience (S. Poni, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Italy)
- Applying the eddy covariance technique for carbon farming certification in vineyards (A. Pitacco, University of Padua, Italy)
📢 What’s next? The 12 winners will benefit from wider visibility through new outreach materials: digital story, technical factsheets, cost-benefit analysis…!
